OCR: [ 1922 ] By order-in-council on 26 April 1922, the Canadian government authorized the shield of the new Canadian coat of Arms to be placed on the fly of the Red Ensign, which was to be flown by the Canadian merchant marine. On 26 January 1942, another order-in-council authorized the flying of the Canadian Red Ensign on government buildings abroad. Although the Canadian Red Ensign had only limited official use, it was still popularly regarded as the Canadian flag.
